6/24/05 REDUCTION IN OHIO REGISTRATION FEE AWAITS GOVERNOR'S SIGNATURE
Ohio aircraft owners could be getting some relief from outsized registration fees. The state's budget bill (House Bill 66), which includes a reduction of the aircraft license tax from a flat $100-per-aircraft to a $15-per-seat fee, was sent to Gov. Bob Taft Tuesday. AOPA state legislative experts have been working to reduce the tax since 2002, when state legislators increased it by 800 percent. (Before the switch to the flat fee, Ohio charged $3 per seat to register aircraft, a fee that hadn't increased since 1941.) "We again commend Gov. Taft, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the General Assembly for listening to Ohio pilots and reducing the aircraft license tax," said Roger Cohen, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. "AOPA made mitigating the tax a top priority, and we're pleased that Ohio aircraft owners soon will experience some needed relief."
6/15/05 Part 103 Petition Update
Carrier Petition Update - 06/15/2005
USUA has been receiving many calls & emails concerning the ststus of the Carrier Petition. As you remember, USUA member Dick Carrier submitted a petition to FAA October 7, 2004, requesting a safety study involving Part 103 legal ultralights. This safety study would allow those ultralights the use of additional safety items (wheel brakes, additional instrumentation, electric start, etc). The
weights associated with those items, would then be added to the empty weight allowance for those items installed- thereby making an extremely safe legal ultralight.
Since the petition was submitted, many ultralighters have made comment to the document, and FAA began the process of analysis.
The first step for the petition, was to pass through the FAA legal department. This, according to FAA sources reporting to Mr. Carrier,
was achieved with little or no obstructions. This is obviously, a good thing.
It then moved back to FAA. Because of the overwhelming number of comments received regarding this petition, FAA was then obligated to read and evaluate each comment. This apparently took some time. (Ultralighters are passionate about their sport, and have a great deal to say when given the opportunity. And rightly so; a favorable outcome to the Carrier Petition could prove to be one of the most important advances to ultralight aviation, since Part 103 itself.)
Next, because FAA's review of the comments left the petition as a new document, it had to go back to the legal department. It again
passed through with seemingly little problem.
As of this morning, the Carrier Petition is reportedly in the Rulemaking department, undergoing processing that would lead to it's
publishing. It is entirely possible that it could be published in the Federal Register in the next few weeks.
USUA will continually report on the progress of the Carrier Petition, and issue press releases accordingly.
5/9/05 Steve Goeke and a new plane
Steve has found a good deal on a Ran's S-12 and should be picking it up shortly. We'll be glad to see him back in the air this summer and will hopefully fly along on some of our "Fly-Outs".
5/05/2005: USUA Petitions FAA
Acting from a request from it's members, and with the encouragement of the FAA Sport Pilot Branch (AFS-610), USUA is taking the lead in an action that will allow additional time for ultralight pilots and their vehicles, to transition into Sport Pilot. And, since the existing ultralight training programs have been extremely successful in training safe pilots throughout the years, USUA is also recommending that the exemptions allowing two place ultralights for training purposes, be extended as well. These extensions to the timelines set forth in the Sport Pilot rule, should allow for an increasing number of participants in the new FAA program- and the continuation (albeit a temporary continuation) of a proven safe method for training pilots of these type of aircraft.
This action by USUA is in response to the slow-moving Sport Pilot implementation and transitioning process. Compounding the situation is the anticipated limited availability of certificated Special Light Sport Aircraft available for purchase over the next few years.
USUA realizes that not all members are planning on participating in the Sport Pilot program- opting instead, to return to the well loved single seat Part 103 ultralight. It is important to realize however, that many members enjoy flying fat or two seat ultralights. This proposed petition would benefit both.
After the drafting of the petition is complete, USUA extends the opportunity to all other organizations operating FAA recognized ultralight training programs to sign on, and take advantage of the benefits it may provide for their members. When submitted to FAA, the final petition will be printed in the pages of UltraFlight Magazine, and on the USUA website.
Jan 25 - AOPA backs bill to reduce Ohio aircraft registration tax
When the Ohio legislature increased the state's aircraft registration tax by nearly 800% for small aircraft two years ago, AOPA vowed it would fight to correct the inequity. Since the tax hike was implemented, AOPA State Affairs Manager Keith Holt and AOPA Regional Representative Bill Leavens have lobbied legislators, arguing that it was unfair to charge pilots of small private planes the same $100 registration fee for a four-seat piston aircraft that a commercial jetliner pays. Alerted to a patently unfair situation, Ohio lawmakers have introduced a bill in the Senate, SB 230, and one is expected in the House to reduce the registration fee to $15 per seat. If enacted, the legislation would save the typical Cessna 172 owner $40 a year.
Editor's note: Sport Planes will currently have to pay the $100 registration fee (tax).
Jan 25 - DUC Members Attend BUG Safety Seminar
Steve Goeke, Glenn Zink, Ron Richards, Conrad Swensen, Rich Jennings and Mike Peters attended the annual Kentucky Safety Seminar hosted BUG. As usual, it was a great event with lots of door and raffle prizes. The speakers this year were Jim Sweeney from the USUA, speaking on upgrading from UL pilot to Sport Pilot and registering your (fat) UL as a Sport plane, Jim Stephenson fro ASC, speaking on his Sport Pilot Blitz program, and Alistair Wilsion, speaking primarily on what you need to know to become a SP instructor.
BUG Safety Seminar Photos Unfortunately, I did not get shots of the DUC members, and Ann Sorrels, and Dave Hempy. I'll do better next time!

Mar 26 - SPORT PILOT RULE UNEXPECTEDLY RETURNS TO FAA
The FAA has temporarily withdrawn the proposed Sport Pilot rule from consideration by the federal Office of Management and Budget. Just before a 90-day review period expired, FAA Administrator Marion Blakey ordered the proposal withdrawn so that the agency could answer questions about its economic costs and benefits. The questions were raised during the OMB review, essentially the final step in the approval process for the new Sport Pilot certificate and accompanying Light-Sport Aircraft category. AOPA has supported the Sport Pilot rule in large part because of the proposal's recognition that a driver's license is adequate evidence of medical fitness to fly. For more information on the proposal, see AOPA's regulatory brief <http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/regulatory/regsport.html>.

Mar 7 - A visit to B&S Canopies
We would like to thank our hosts of our last club meeting, Jeff and Becky Rogers, the owners of B&S Canopies north of Dayton. Jeff provided a great demonstration of aircraft canopy creation this last Thursday. (Check out the pictures in the photo section). Everyone had an opportunity to drill and cut on a canopy, and Becky served up some great cakes, pies and ice cream. It was well worth the trip up there.
Feb 5 - DUC becoming ASC Club
The membership present at the February meeting held at Moraine Airpark has unanimously voted to become an Aero Sports Connection (ASC) Club. There is no membership fee. Several of the members need to be members of ASC, but we already meet that requirement. Jim and Deb Stephenson, as well as Ann Sorrell, have been very supportive of the club and it is nice to be able to thank them by joining their Club program. Jim's response was: "That is great! ...Thank you and you will get a package shortly, with a club handbook and a windsock".

Jan 9 - BUG Safety Seminar Reminder
If you plan to attend the BUG Safety Seminar in Lexington on Jan.24th, and wish to be part of the car pool that will leave from our area, please be at the BOB EVANS on Byers Rd (across I-75, from the Dayton Mall) at 6:00 AM Saturday morning (the 24th). At that time, we'll figure out who wants to ride with who. The only "hitch" in this plan is that some of us will be staying for the evening program and dinner, and some will be returning to Dayton (Bob Evans) after the 'day' seminar.
IF...you wish to stay for the dinner (which I understand is always even better than the 'day' program), then you'll need to order dinner tickets right away, as they have to be able to tell the food preparation people there at UK, how many people will be eating dinner. So, if you want to stay and eat and listen to Dennis' presentation, then you need to order your ticket. Send a check for $15 (made out to Bluegrass Ultralight Group) to Jim Price, 621 Woodduck Ln. , Georgetown, KY 40324
Just remember..the BUG Seminar is ALWAYS the most exciting thing going on in January...unless you've got a plane that is 'ski-equipped'...and I don't know of any DUC member who's done that yet. One last "enticement" to get you to go to the seminar...check out the list of stuff being given away at: http://www.bluegrassultralightgroup.org/safety/2004/
Dec 9 - 3rd Party Liability Insurance Available Soon
USUA has negotiated with First Flight Insurance for 3rd party liability insurance for its' registered pilot members. The insurance will be underwritten by Lloyds of London, and it was mentioned by Dale Hooper, VP of USUA, on the UltraFlight Radio program, that it will include FAT ULs ( Note: I do not see fat ULs mentioned in the details on the USUA site at the time of this post). Check the USUA site for further details at: http://www.usua.org/Insurance/Insurance.html
Dec 8 - Members Only Area Initiated
DUC Members have their own password protected area now! Future club newsletters will be provided in this area for those that have Internet access, which will save the club substantial mailing costs. Other information of a non-public nature may be displayed in this area, as well. Members will be notified of the password or ID/password in the near future.
Nov 24 - Dennis D'Angelo - Guest Speaker at BUG Safety Seminar Dinner
Dennis D'Angelo, the "Air Boss" for the Dayton to Kitty Hawk Trip, will be the guest speaker for the 9th Annual BUG Safety Seminar, Saturday night dinner on January 24, 2004. The Bug Safety Seminar runs Friday through Sunday, January 23 -25. The topic will be about the fabulously successful Dayton to Kitty Hawk Trip that took flight on June 22 of 2003.
Nov 10 - DUC Presidency still open
Due to upcoming surgery, Craig Cochran will have to decline the presidency of DUC. We hope everything goes well Craig, and hope to see you soon. So, the job is still up for grabs! We need a volunteer to shoulder the responsibilites to take the club into the future. How about it guys!
Nov 6 - Thanks Rich!
I hope the next time you see Rich, our past president for the last four years, that you give him a good pat on the back and tell him how much you have appreciated his efforts and what he has done for the club. You have no way of knowing how much time, effort, and money that Rich has put forth for the club and for the Dayton to Kitty Hawk Trip. Great job!!!
Nov 6 - Sad note!
It saddens us to announce that Becky Kuschel's Mother, Martha Larger passed away Thursday Evening. She was 75 and over the last 2 and half years suffered strokes. She had pneumonia for the last 2 and half weeks. Becky and her Sister Debbie were there for her last moments.
Nov 6 - Statement from Rich Jennings
Dear DUC members,
As we come to the end of this most historic year, (and we come to the 'changing of the guard' within the DUC), I feel like I ought to write a final note to all of our members. There are many things I'd like to review and discuss with you all.
For those of you not at the November 2nd meeting, the 'vote' was for the following people to hold officer positions in 2004:
President: Craig Cochran
Vice President: Dennis D'Angelo
Safety Officer: Steve Goeke
Treasurer: Jim Greene
Webmaster: Mike Peters
Newsletter: Rich Jennings
A hardy congratulations to all new office holders. I hope everyone will give full support to these new officers.
As I 'exit' the President's position, I want to thank all DUC members for their support and help. As you know I do not consider myself much of a 'leader', but I've tried to do all I could to make the club something you would be proud to be a member of. I haven't always succeeded, but at least I feel I've given it my best shot. I sincerely apologize to any member that feels that I haven't done very well while serving as the club's President for the past four years. All I can say is that I tried my best. Sometimes that's just not good enough. On the other hand, I want to thank those of you who have taken the time, (at one point or another), to encourage me to 'keep on keeping on'. Your kind words and helpful suggestions seem to always come at a time when I needed them most. (You know who you are, so thanks a bunch guys).
The club has grown in numbers, but not to the extent it could. There are many people who own ULs in the area that don't want to join the DUC (or any UL club) for any number of reasons. There are many people who are interested in getting into UL aviation, and don't know where to go or who to talk to. So, what I'm saying is the 'potential' for growth within the club is always there. We just need to find the 'right appeal' to make those people want to be a part of the DUC. We need to offer them (and at the same time, our own members) more reasons to be a part of the DUC.
We've enjoyed some successful events in the last few years and some not-quite-so successful events. Most of the 'unsuccessful' events where the Fly-Ins "just plain got rained out". But on the good side of the ledger, we have enjoyed some wonderful things too. We got to have our monthly meetings in the Air Force Museum conference room (a spectacular venue, to say the least) for a number of months in 2000 and early 2001 (pre 9-11). Our turnout was always good for those meetings. Although our hopes and dreams for a Fly-In on the front lawn of the AFM never came true, we did have two great years of having a very-well-received Static Display of ULs in front of the Museum. That was in July of 2001 and June 2002. We were able to display our planes, let the public have an up close and personal look at the ULs and talk to them about the fun of flying ULs. During the 2001 event, Dick Graham was able to do some actual flying during the event, so that was a very special added touch. I want to thank all the guys who helped make those events possible with their attendance at various meetings with the AFM staff : Dick Graham, Val Kozak, Mike Peters, Bob Knight, Andy Edwards. Also, I want to thank the guys who went to the great effort to bring your planes out to the Museum for display. It was a lot of work and hard on both aircraft owner and aircraft on display, as well. Participants in the 2001 event were: Larry Coulthard (Coulthard Special), Dick Graham (Kolb Firestar), Ken Holzhausan (Quicksilver MX), Bob Knight (Buckeye PPC), Val Kozak (Mitchelwing A-10), Rich Jennings (New Avenger), John Statt (Ultrapiet), Mel Synder (Buckeye PPC), Joel Walworth (Minimax), Steve Welch (Aerolite 103), and Glenn Zink (Weedhopper). Participants in the 2002 event were: Jim Greene (Weedhopper), Dave Lawson (Aerolite 103), Rich Jennings (New Avenger), Bob Knight (Buckeye PPC), Steve Welch (Aerolite 103), Tom Jackson (Destiny PPC). And I want to thank Mike Zimmerman for producing the wonderful video for the club, that was shown continuously at the AFM event. It gave the public a delightful view of the fun we all enjoy with our Ultralights.
In June of 2002, we had the pleasure of learning a whole bunch of stuff about Rotax engines from Danny Day at a mid-week seminar.
In July of that year, we were blessed by a visit to Dahio by the fantastic Quicksilver Airshow Act of Bob Essell and Jon Falkner, and laughed as they told stories of their airshow experiences.
Over the course of the last 4 years, we've enjoyed the Fly-Ins put on by Craig Cochran, Brenda and Bob Ferguson, Bob Knight, George Medve and Larry Coulthard, Bill Elliott, the Nulltown Wingnuts, the Flying Angels of New Carlisle and their 4th of July Parade of Planes, Vern Macintosh (Mac), Rod and Becky Kushell, and many others. I mention these people and organizations because most of these fly-ins were annual events. It takes a lot of effort and cost to provide these 'fly-in/pig-out' events , and we are very appreciative of their efforts.
Then, in June of this year, (the most historically memorable year in our lifetimes), 7 DUC members and 19 "friends of the DUC" from out of state, made our historic flight to Kitty Hawk. After the four years of planning and worrying about how the trip might go, it turned out even better than we hoped. All the pilots and ground crew members worked together in the most marvelous manner to bring off this great trip with a minimum of problems. I want to thank Dick Graham, Mike Peters and Mike Zimmerman for their pre-trip help and advise. Without them who knows what might have happened. But most of all...I want to thank Dennis D'Angelo for his outstanding leadership in serving as AirBoss for the trip. Without his 'mother-henning' us while enroute, who knows where we would be right now. I shutter to think of the 'possibilities'. The trip will provide a lifetime of memories for everyone involved, (especially myself). I can't tell you the number of times I've heard from participants of the trip, and how much they enjoyed the whole thing. But again, I say, it was through their great efforts, that everything happened so smoothly and memorably.
Ever since I've got into flying Ultralights, I've had the good fortune to meet great people in the sport. So, I felt like I 'owed' all of those people a 'serious debt of gratitude' for helping me enjoy the sport so much. I hope that my efforts to get the "proper recognition" of Ultralights and the people who fly them, have been in some small way, successful this year.
So .... thanks for letting me 'do my best' to serve you over the last few years. I KNOW the DUC can continue to grow and serve it's members well...but each of you has to continue to do your bit to make it happen. Remember, the DUC is what YOU make it, so pitch it and help the new club officers in any way you can. I know I will !
Sincerely,
Rich Jennings
Oct 14 - December 17th sold out at Kitty Hawk
Good thing many of us had ordered extra tickets for the Centennial Celebration on the 17th. That day is now sold out! Oct 14 - Congrats to Dave Gardner
Dave made it back to Perris, CA on Friday afternoon (Oct. 10), after one hilacious trip from California to Dayton, to Kitty Hawk and back to Dayton. The Rans was temporarily parked at Dayton-New Lebanon until Dave could make the trip back to CA via South Carolina, Louisiana, and on to Perris, CA. Dave had to stay sharp the entire trip because he did the entire journey without GPS or Nav radios.
Oct 9 - Gardner makes New Mexico
Tuesday Dave and Larry flew from Junction, TX to El Paso. They had to fly low through light rain and a bit of turbulence due to thunderstorm activity. The spent the night in El Paso. Today (Oct 8) on departure they picked up the Rio Grand and followed the river through down town El Paso, on to Las Cruses NM, Deming NM, and tonight are staying with cousin Tim in Silver City, NM.
Dave hopes to get to Casa Grande or Buckeye, AZ tomorrow. All is going well. ...Tammy

Oct 7 - Fly-In Annoucement
This coming Saturday, the DUC's good friend John McCarter of Shelby Ohio, is inviting all DUC and TUPA members to the Fly-In/Cruise In that will be held at Shelby County Airport (12G) in Shelby Ohio. It is exactly a 100 mile flight to Shelby (100.4 acording to AirNav), from Dahio (I44). Lots of activities, food and entertainment will be on hand all day. John has said that there should be a really good turnout of GA, homebuilts, experimentals, and many ULs in attendance. Also, a good selection of classic cars, street rods, and motorcycles should be on hand to enjoy.
f anyone is interested in flying up there (as a group) then please contact Rich via email. It should be less than a two hour flight for most of us. If you'd like to stay over night, John has mentioned that he can make arrangements for that too.
Oct 7 - Bad weather delays Dave
Dave and Larry didn't get too far yesterday. They couldn't take off until noon and were on the ground by 2:00. They stayed the night in Junction, TX. They are hoping for better progress today. ...Tammy
Oct 6 - Gardner in Austin
Sunday was a great flying day for Dave and Larry. Getting low on fuel they landed on a road and taxied to a liquor/convienence store with one gas pump out front. The proprietor had no gas to sell. A curious passerby saw them land and stopped to talk. He offered to go home and get some gas cans and take Larry to the gas station. Meanwhile Dave was in the store buying all the fixings for a nice lunch: bread, lunchmeat, mustard, etc... When the guys got back from the gas station they had a tailgate picnic. They gave the remaining lunch groceries to the helpful man. Then, this good samaritan helped them take off by marking where the wires cross the road. He drove down the road and stopped with his flashers on at the point where the wires crossed the rode. Dave and Larry made a safe departure and kept heading west until evening. They stopped outside of Austin (I can't remember exactly where) at an airport that had a very nice hotel right next door. The hotel had a great restaurant (more meat and potatoes for Dave) and a spa. They could see the plane from the room too.
Today the plan is to keep heading west. They will stop in Silver City NM to see Dave's cousin Tim again. Seems likely they will be home on Thurs. or Friday. ...Tammy
Oct 5 - Gardner heading West
Dave has enjoyed staying with the Landry's in Louisiana these past few days. He met and shook hands with the Louisiana governor at the local airport. There was a gyro-copter putting on a great show that day too. Dave picked his friend Larry Preston up from the New Orleans airport on Saturday afternoon. They plan to head out early tomorrow morning. Dave would like to cross 500 miles on Sunday. I'll keep you posted. ...Tammy
Oct 3 - Gardner's in Louisiana
Dave and Chris made it the Landry's in Franklin, LA by dark. I talked to Dave only briefly last night so I don't know any details of the flight other than that they made it there safely. Chris will head back to Ohio commercially this afternoon. Our friend Larry Preston will fly to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon and fly the rest of the way back with Dave. ...Tammy
Oct 1 - Chris & Dave Gardner thru Georgia
They flew from Anderson, SC and leisurely made their way to Twin Lakes. There they were met with a warm welcome. The Clavel's invited them to stay the night. Their hospitality was much appreciated and Dave and Chris had a great time there.
They departed Twin Lakes this morning. Dave gave me a call today around 9:15 am, and said that they made it all the way across Georgia without stopping thanks to a strong tail wind. They would like to make it to the Landry's in Franklin, LA this afternoon.
All is going well! ....Tammy
Sept 30 - Dave Gardner has left the building, er Dayton!
(Recap: Dave had flown to Dayton from California to participate in the Dayton to Kitty Hawk Trip. Due to time restraints, he had left his Rans in Dayton, to return in Sept. to fly it on home.)
Dave and Joan (sister) left Dayton at 11:00 am, Tuesday. They flew to Lexington KY, where Joan got out and his brother Chris got in. They flew near Knoxville, over the Smokies at 7500, and landed in Anderson, SC. The weather was severe clear and they had a little tail wind. Dave and Chris are staying with a friend of Dave's. They all went out for a great "meat and potato" dinner.
Tomorrow the plan is to land at Twin Lakes Executive Airpark near Aiken, SC. This where we bought the one acre lot on a paved runway. They will stay the night there and visit another friend of ours who lives near by.

Sept 26 - We're going back to Kitty Hawk (albeit by car this time)
Greetings to all participants of the Dayton to Kitty Hawk Flight,
It's been two months since we returned from our 'most memorable' flight. (At least it was 'most memorable' for me, and I hope it was for you too). I can't thank each and every one of you enough for your wonderful participation. YOU are the ones that MADE IT HAPPEN and you deserve the full credit and praise from the "Ultralight Press". Hopefully, you'll be seeing articles about the trip in the next few months. Ann Sorrels did a GREAT job of putting together a whole lot of stuff (mostly photos) in the September issue of Aero Connections Magazine. There is more to come in upcoming months, so don't miss it.
My primary reason for contacting you today, is to let you know that Brenda Ferguson came up with another great idea....RETURN to Kitty Hawk on December 16th, and be on hand for the flight of the Ken Hyde/EAA Wright Flyer at 10:35 AM on December 17th, (100 years to the minute, from the time the Wright Brothers made their first flight in the world's first powered and controlled aircraft.
Brenda has reserved enough 'space' at Coinjock Marinia/Motel/Resturant to accommodate 26 people for the evening of the 16th and 17th. I know it's a 'mid-week thing' but that's just how things happen to be. And you know, (if you've checked) motels around the Kitty Hawk area have been booked for many months. Also, to view the activities on the grounds of the Wright Memorial that day you'll have to have a ticket. As far as I know, those are getting mighty close to being sold out. But we have 36 tickets available (because we went together and purchased (what we hope will be) enough tickets to accommodate all the people who might want to be a part of our group.
So, my question to you today is....do you think you'd like to be a part of our group which will be going (by car caravan) to Currituck on the 16th of December, so that we can be on hand to witness "history recreated" ? If so, please let me know right away so that I can inform Brenda and she can keep in touch with you during the next two and a half months.
Like I said, we only have enough 'space' (beds) for about 26 people. If more than that want to go along, we 'may' be able to 'improvise' some "sleeping-bag-floor-space" that could help to get everyone 'situated'. The cost is extremely reasonable (because of the large number of people we can divide the total amount up by), so don't worry that it would be expensive. And for those of you who enjoyed the food at the Marina restaurant, you KNOW you'll enjoy the dinner there ! They 'may' have a breakfast available for us, but as you can imagine, we'll have to get up fairly early on the 17th, in order to get down the road to Kitty Hawk to be able to get into the park on time. While we're there (for the day), there will be a lot more than just the 12 second flight by the Wright Flyer. The National Park people plan a full day of interesting things to see and do, including top name entertainment.
Since I know that all of you are "Visionaries" and can fully appreciate what a wonderful opportunity it is to be able to celebrate something so historic as the First Flight, (recreated 100 years later), then I know you'll want to be a part of this 'quick trip' also. We all realize that it's mighty close to Christmas...but maybe you could consider this as your Christmas present to yourself or your loved one.
I hope you all can go......PLEASE contact me or Brenda Ferguson (her email address is WEFLY2@fuse.net ).
Thank you for evermore !
Rich
Sept 22 - National Air Tour
Special reminder: The National Air Tour will be at Greene County Airport on Tuesday and Wednesday. All club members should make an effort to check out this wonderful group of classic aircraft !
Sept 10 - Attention all DUC members:
At the next meeting, we will take a few minutes prior to our tour of the Wright Bicycle Shop, to conduct some 'club business'.
We will be requesting volunteers to step up and offer to run for all club officer positions (President, Treasurer, Safety Officer, Newsletter Editor/Producer and Webmaster).
I will not be running for office again (OK, lets hold down the cheering for a minute guys), and the club needs YOU to step up to the plate and offer to do your part to make the club even better. I will fully support any and all members who are elected, (as I know all too well, how much work it takes at times to keep things "semi-organized").
I've enjoyed my long 'stay' as a club officer, but I look forward to seeing new club officers take over and bring new ideas and new enthusiasm to making the club grow, and fun to be a part of.
So please come to the meeting (full details will be in the next newsletter about time/location/etc), and PLEASE offer your name up for a voting sheet which will be passed out at the November meeting.
Thanks,
Rich Jennings

Aug 27 -
I just set up our October DUC meeting (on the 5th) with the folks down at the Wright Brothers/Aviation Heritage Historical Park. The club will be given a special tour and talk by the NPS employees on duty that day. We're scheduled to show up at what would be our normal club meeting start time, 2:00PM. Parking is available. The location of the Wright Bicycle Shop is 22 South Williams Street, just off W. Third Street. (about three or four blocks after you pass over the bridge from downtown Dayton). It will be something different to do as a club, and what better year to round-out our knowledge of the Wrights, than this one !
I plan to set up the November meeting at the 'Interpretive Center' at Huffman Prairie Flying Field, which an additional "tour and talk" by the NPS employees.
Everyone should bring their family members, as these meetings will not be your 'typical boring DUC meeting' !

The Fergusons have two hangers there. Two others TUPA members have hangers there also.
Plans are to go to Lumberton for breakfast at 9:00.

Aug 26 - Discovery Wings Channel airs Oshkosh 2003
On September 17, The Discovery Wings Channel airs Oshkosh 2003: The Centennial Edition, an EAA TV-produced recap of the recently held EAA AirVenture Oshkosh convention. The one-hour special focuses on piloting, economics of general aviation, homebuilding and access to the skies, EAA's unique aviation community at AirVenture, and a look ahead to aviation's second century.
Featured are such notable aviation figures as Norman Mineta, Secretary of Transportation; Marion Blakey, FAA Administrator; Robert "Hoot" Gibson, former NASA Chief astronaut; J. Mac McClellan, editor of Flying magazine; Tom Crouch, Department of Aeronautics Chair at the National Air and Space Museum; as well as EAA President Tom Poberezny, Executive Vice President Bob Warner, and others from the convention.
Scheduled airtime is 9 p.m. EDT, with repeats at midnight and (September 18) 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. Be sure to watch, and tell your friends!
On September 19, a two-hour documentary, The Wright Brothers: First In Flight, premieres on The Discovery Channel, featuring extensive focus on EAA's Countdown to Kitty Hawk celebration and the construction of EAA's authentic reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer by The Wright Experience, Warrenton, Virginia. The documentary follows the parallel paths of the Wrights in 1903 and The Wright Experience in 2003 as Ken Hyde and his team employ "reverse engineering" to interpolate the brothers' design process and results from existing Wright aircraft and parts, family correspondence, and other sources.
EAA President Tom Poberezny appears in the documentary to describe the centennial celebration's significance along with EAA's Countdown to Kitty Hawk festivities, which culminate in the actual flight of the Flyer reproduction precisely at 10:35 on December 17, 2003.
The program first airs on September 19 at 8 p.m. EDT, with repeats scheduled for 11 p.m.; 11 a.m. September 21; 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. September 25; and 6 p.m. September 27. Portions of the original program will appear on Discovery, along with same-day footage from EAA's Countdown to Kitty Hawk celebration and the planned first flight re-creation at Kitty Hawk, on December 17 at 9 p.m. The program will be repeated at midnight and the next day at noon.
Aug 8 - Moraine Airpark - Chapter 48 meeting
Several of the DUC attended the August EAA Chapter 48 meeting Aug 7th at Moraine Airpark. Greg Koedel flew in with his N-3 Pup and Rich and I (Mike Peters) attempted to fly in, but were thwarted by rain showers and lightning and turned back. We drove instead, as did Dick Graham and Steve Goeke. We were all treated to the firing up of a replica of the 1903 Wright engine and a slide show about its' construction by Terry Hesler, the builder. It would prop start on the 2nd or 3rd attempt every time. Quite impressive! Other replicas have to use starters. I should have some photos shortly.
Aug 5 - Ben has soloed
Ben Washburn has soloed his great looking Apollo trike on July 25th. We look forward to flying with you Ben! Congratulations! Bob Knight was Ben's instructor. It took a while, struggling with weather and scheduling conflicts, but now we have another DUC airborne!
June 16 - No July Newsletter
Due to the Kitty Hawk Trip, there wiill more than likely NOT be a DUC Newsletter for July. Rich will be quite tied up with the trip and its' management.
BTW, we encourage all DUCs to come on out and greet all of the out-of-town pilots this coming weekend, and show them our DUC hospitality. There should be quite a show of aircraft too!
May 02 - Tami meets the President on the Lincoln
I am forwarding this to all our members so you can share the enthusiasm and joy, that Tami, Becky and Rod enjoyed yesterday. It "personalizes" the war effort to know that one of our own, has a family member serving the country in such an important location.
Congratulations to the Kuschel family, and a "big THANK YOU to Tami" for your service to our country... Rich
Here is Tami's message:
Hey Dad and Becky,
Just wanted to say real quick that I got to sit 4 people down from the
President at dinner, and the white house staff took pictures and our ship
guy took a picture when he posed at our table. He is standing next to me in
the picture, and he talked to me. Pretty cool! they said we would get
copies, but I dont know when. Just wanted to brag!
Love,
Tami
April 16 - TUPA 20th Anniversary Event on June 7th
Tri-State Ultralight Pilots Association have planned for a very big 20th anniversary fly-in at Hamilton's Butler County Regional Airport on June 7th. Those that would like to participate should contact Brenda Ferguson at wefly2@fuse.net before May 1st . There will be lots of people, food, raffles, including one for a $300 GPS. ASC will be there to do a feature article on the event. Click here for Airport Information.
April 9 - April meeting and another new DUC
Brian Wilcox of Kettering just joined the DUC last Sunday at the April meeting. Brian has his Private Pilot ticket, but is thinking about getting into ULs, even to the point of building his own plane, of his own design. A big DUC Welcome to Brian. He can count on all DUC to be of help in his plans, if he desires it.
At the meeting there were almost as many guests, as there were members. Unfortunately, we did not have a key for the Airport office, but Dick Graham graciously offered his hangar for the meeting. Archer Thomas and friend (sorry, I do not have the name) from the Camp Birch scout camp near Yellow Springs and Clifton, attended the meeting. Archer would like some of us to come out to the camp and discuss our form of aviation to the scouts sometime this summer. Hopefully, we will be able to fly into the camp for the presentation.
April 4 - New DUC
Please welcome our newest member, Ace Weeks. Ace has a long and illustrious background with EAA Chapter 48 and an unmatched knowledge of aviation...particularly Homebuilt aircraft.
Mar25 - Centennial of Flight Pens Available
Rich has engraved pens for all club members. Please come to the meeting on April 6th at Dayton-New Lebanon Airport, 2:00 P.M. to pick up your pen. It is much too expensive to mail them out to everyone. The enscription reads:
DAYTON ULTRALIGHT CLUB Member
Centennial of Flight 2003
The April meeting is especially important with so many spring and summer events approaching. Be sure to come on out!
Mar 17 - Dayton Air Show Bust
Due to insurance requirements, DUC will not be a 4-day participant at the 2003 Dayton Air Show. There is a possibility though, of flying into the show in the morning to display our birds, and fly out in the evening. It would not be a requirement to attend all four days. There will be future news on this option.
Mar 13 - Ann Sorrells to do feature article on DUC and TUPA
Ann Sorrells, a displaced member of the TUPA club, (she moved to Florida - must be rough), is now working for Jim Stephenson at ASC. She is going to be in the area this spring to get information for the upcoming May feature in ASC's magazine.
Mar 10 - DUC's new domain name - daytonulclub.org
As of March 7th, the Dayton Ultralight Club has a new domain name. You can get to the club site now, by using the following URL: http://www.daytonulclub.org. The site can still be reached by the old URL, so it will not have to be changed immediately in your browser's "Favorites". The new domain is more descriptive and if you haven't already noticed, there are no more pop-up advertisements.
Mar 4 - Dayton Air Show / March Meeting from the Prez
Hi to all DUC members and visitors to our web site.
Our March meeting was very well attended by members and guests. It was very nice of Craig Cochran to host the meeting at his beautiful house and fabulous hanger. He even provided refreshments, so you DUC members that didn't turn out missed one of our better meetings.
I'll be reviewing what was discussed at the meeting in the next newsletter, but one thing I do need to urgently bring to your attention is the wonderful opportunity WE (all UL pilots in the area ...and beyond) will have to participate in the Dayton Air Show. This years' event will be the biggest show Dayton will EVER have, and we have been given the historic opportunity to do a daily fly-by of Ultralights each morning during the four-day-long show. If you have any interest at all in being part of this, please contact me at 937-256-2211 or Dick Graham at 937-236-6533 or Mike Peters at 937-848-4665. Any of us can tell you the details about what you'll need to do to be part of this historic opportunity. The dates are July 17,18,19,20. You can fly in any or all of the days. But we'll need for you to contact us as soon as possible, because we have to provide a list of participants to the Air Show Officals at our next meeting (probably in about 5 to 6 weeks). We need at least a dozen participants in order for this fly-by to have the desired 'visual impact'. If it all works out well, then we'll have a "foot-in-the-door" to be part of the Dayton Air Show in the future. We can't let this opportunity pass us by guys!
So call me or Dick or Mike right away...PLEASE !
Jan 29 - Dayton Air Show
Rich Jennings spoke with Justin Sykes of the Dayton Air Show and he has indicated that he still wants the DUC to do fly-bys every morning of the 2003 show and to have a static display. There will be a meeting setup with Justin in the not too distant future, to discuss our involvement.
Jan 25 - 8th Annual Kentucky Ultralight Safety Seminar
Seven DUC members attended the BUG sponored Safety Seminar in Lexington, Kentucky. It was very well received and congrats to BUG, especially Dave Hempy, for putting together such a successful event. Most people walk away with a door prize and fun is had by all.
Jan 15 - More Trip Feedback
"We would be more than happy to accommodate you during your stop, in fact it couldn't happen at a more opportune time. We were planning to have an airport appreciation day at the Northeastern Regional Airport in June of 2003 and the theme and center of attraction was going to be ultralights and experimental aircraft. If you intend to make us your stop, we will coordinate the dates to match. Lunch was being provided for all the ultralights that were anticipated in our original plans, and we would certainly extend that to your group also". --George A. Cipra

Jan 14 - E-mail received from Richard Bunch, Executive Director of the Edenton, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce:
"Good afternoon! Just stopped by the Northeast Regional Airport in Edenton and heard the good news. Its great that your Ultralight club is stopping by Edenton. What a flight! You guys will be having a blast. Anyway, I am the Executive Director of our Chamber of Commerce and Nancy Nicholls of our Tourism Office would like to welcome you and your ultralights to Edenton. We have seen your flight plan and would like to provide lunch or other services to you for your short stay in Edenton. We are just a few miles from Downtown Edenton and our hotels and b&bs. Please feel free to use this office to ask questions or request services. I will be in contact with our airport manager concerning our email. I look forward to hearing from you! Safe flying". Richard Bunch
Jan 01 - Be sure to take a look at the Jan. 1st Dayton Daily News' Special Edition "Celebrating A Century of Flight". It includes this years 100th Anniversary of Flight events. The article "Balloons, blimps, ultralights, sailplanes will soar in events flanking air show" by Tim Gaffney, has a nice blurb on our Dayton to Kitty Hawk trip. Thanks Tim! Also, you will see our trip listed in the June events calendar on page 6.
Dec 12 - The February issue of Smithsonian's Air & Space Magazine will have our Dayton to Kitty Hawk trip listed in their 100th Anniversary of Flight event listing. It should be complete with the DUC and Trip logos.
We have recently been receiving emails and calls from people and clubs in North Carolina offering info on preferred airports in their area and offering help, such as fuel and food. This is much appreciated! Several of them would like to join us on the way! Is this going to be fun or what?
Dec 5 - Rich had his talk radio debut on Dec. 3rd on the Ultra Flight Radio program. He did a great job and the hosts want him back on the show in the future, either before the Kitty Hawk trip or when we actually arrive at First Flight airport. You can listen to an archive of the show. It is Segment 5 on UltraFlight Radio . Also, take a listen to Donnie Eccker's interview ( Segment 4). Donnie is always entertaining!
Nov 25 - DUC President, Rich Jennings, may be interviewed on Ultra Flight Radio, Tuesday, Dec. 3rd., to discuss the Kitty Hawk trip. Periodically check the UF Radio site for their schedule.
Nov 21 - Check out the Ultra Flight Radio link in the Links section. Our 2003 Kitty Hawk trip has been submitted as a possible topic for a show in the future.
Nov 19 - DUC President, Rich Jennings, has contacted the Dayton Air Show about doing a fly-by and static display, and found that they had already been thinking about this idea. Rich's timing couldn't have been more perfect! Final approval will not come until next month, so let's keep our fingers crossed. It's looking real positive! Keep checking the Dayton Air Show site (http://www.daytonairshow.com) to see if we make the list of performers.
Nov 7 - DUC President, Rich Jennings, accompanied by Dick Graham and Mike Peters, were guests at the EAA Chapter 48 November meeting. Rich presented the details of the 2003 Dayton to Kitty Hawk flight and expounded on Ultralights and their definition. All three fielded questions from the membership in attendance.
